Every Vote Counts

Standard

Thursday will be the day the people of Scotland have been waiting for. The vote for separation from the British governement will come to a close and the world will see if a new, independent country is joining them or if will turn out like the Quebec Referendum. Scotland’s separatist leader, Alex Salmond, has been working on Scotland’s independence since Quebec’s separation act in 1995 and plans to do everything in his power to make sure the outcome is not the same. After reading up on how diligent Salmond has been I am pretty convinced he’s the guy for the job. The only thing is, if the vote turns up ‘yes’, will it be beneficial for Scotland? The British monarch has said they will not be able to use the same currency or be subject to British rule, that would mean doing a lot of re-vamping for Scotland, but Salmond is advocating that won’t change. The right answer is a tough call, I can see why independence is so important, to be their own country governed by their own people, it’s a step in the direction of freedom. I personally agree with the idea because I hail from southern Ireland, the part NOT owned by British rule and I am all for independence and not being owned by the government. However, short-term will be tough for the country and I can see Britain trying to make it even tougher if the vote goes through. Whatever the people of Scotland decide will not be easy, both sides must be weighed very carefully and like Britain has said, once the decision is made it’s permanent.
